Easyjet's 9 Million Customers Hacked

EasyJet, the UK’s largest airline, said hackers have accessed the travel details of 9 million customers.

The airline said 2,200 customers also had their credit card details accessed in the data breach, but passport records were not accessed, a company statement said.

EasyJet did not say when the security incident happened or how the hackers accessed its systems, but the company said it referred the incident to the Information Commissioner’s Office.

Those of you who have used Easyjet would be wise to change your passwords, and be extremely wary of phishing and scam emails.

100 Million Capital One Applications Hacked

The FBI has arrested a 33-year-old software engineer in Seattle as part of an investigation into a massive data breach at financial services company Capital One.

Paige A. Thompson, also known by the online handle “erratic,” has been charged with one count of computer fraud and abuse, after an investigation uncovered that a hacker had broken into cloud servers run by Capital One and stole data related to over 100 million credit-card applications.
Exposed information, according to Capital One, included data collected in credit card applications between 2005 and early 2019 such as:

• names
• addresses
• zip codes/postal codes
• phone numbers
• email addresses
• dates of birth
• income

Beyond the credit card application data, the hacker also obtained portions of credit card customer data, including:

• Customer status data, e.g., credit scores, credit limits, balances, payment history, contact information
• Fragments of transaction data from a total of 23 days during 2016, 2017 and 2018

Capital One says that about 140,000 Social Security numbers and approximately 80,000 linked bank account numbers of its secured credit card customers were also breached.

Massive Equifax Security Breach

As per the BBC about 143 million US customers of credit report giant Equifax may have had information compromised in a cyber security breach.

Equifax said cyber-criminals accessed data such as Social Security numbers, birth dates and addresses during the incident.

Some UK and Canadian customers were also affected.

The firm's core consumer and commercial credit databases were not accessed.

Equifax said hackers accessed the information between mid-May and the end of July, when the company discovered the breach.

Malicious hackers won access to its systems by exploiting a "website application vulnerability", it said but provided no further details.

The hackers accessed credit card numbers for about 209,000 consumers, among other information.

Equifax said it had set up a website - www.equifaxsecurity2017.com - through which consumers can check if their data has been caught up in the breach. Many people trying to visit the site reported via social media that they had problems reaching it and that security software flagged it as potentially dangerous.

Unsurprisingly shares in Equifax took a hit.

Three Mobile Hacked - Six Million Customers at Risk

Three Mobile admitted that hackers have successfully accessed its customer upgrade database after using an employee login.

Sources familiar with the incident told the Telegraph that the private information of two thirds of the company's nine million customers could be at risk.

The company confirmed the breach on Thursday evening but declined to say whether customers' data was stolen or how many have been affected.

Three said that the data accessed included names, phone numbers, addresses and dates of birth, but added that it did not include financial information.

As I have noted before, all IT systems are at risk of hacking. Therefore people need to be prepared for their personal data  to be stolen.

Twitter is now back online, for the moment.

Those of you trying to access Twitter at the moment will be having problems, as Twitter is down globally.

The Guardian reports that Twitter has suffered a total outage.

Access to the service began failing over the web, mobile and its API (application programming interface, the system that applications use to speak to the Twitter service) at 8:20am GMT, with error messages warning the network is both “over capacity” and suffering an “internal error”.

The company initially confirmed the outage by, somehow, tweeting, from its @support account. We were unable to see the tweet, because Twitter was down.

Twitter emailed the text of the tweet to the Guardian, which read:

“Some users are currently experiencing problems accessing Twitter. We are aware of the issue and are working towards a resolution.”

What's the betting that this is the work of a spotty teenager?

We can assume that its share price, which has already taken a battering, will fall further because of this.

Financial Cyber War Declared

Seemingly a cyber war has been declared in the Middle East.

"The Tel Aviv Stock Exchange's (Tase's) Web site has been offline this morning, apparently down for "maintenance" hours after a Saudi hacker warned it would be the next target in an escalating cyber-war."

Hacking Threat To 5 Million PC's

Research, carried out by the government, indicates that around 5 million UK home computers are open to criminal attack.

"Internet Safety: The State of the Nation" has been published on the government's website www.getsafeonline.org.

The research shows that UK PC owners are making fundamental errors, that expose them to hacking and identity theft.

Tony Neate, managing director of Get Safe Online said:

"Protecting your home PC is a basic part of being safe and secure from the threat of criminal activity on the internet.

The fact that there are millions of households where the virtual backdoor is left wide open for criminals is a real concern – these people risk not only losing their own personal and financial information, but also put others at risk if criminals are able to access an innocent user's PC or internet connection. None of us would ever leave home without locking our doors and windows; by taking a few simple steps we can all ensure that our computers' doors and windows are automatically 'locked' every time they are switched on."

The research found that:

• 36% of the UK's 13.9 million home internet-connected PC users – 5 million machines – do not have any form of firewall stopping hackers from gaining access to their computers and using personal information.



• 46% do not have anti-spyware software.



• 35% of home PC users said they do not download updates from Microsoft or Apple to ensure that their machines have the latest security updates.



• Over 10% of the 9 million broadband users in the UK do not have a firewall on their home PCs.



• 21% households that use wireless broadband for their PCs say that they do not have password protection on their connections. This means that criminals could "take over" their internet connection and use it to send thousands of spam emails, posing as the legitimate user.



• 25% of home PC users do not have anti-spam programmes which would protect them from "phishing" attacks and other email frauds.



• Almost 1 million home PC users do not have anti-virus software on their machines.

Nick McGrath, Microsoft and Get Safe Online spokesperson, said:

"Governments and businesses are working tirelessly to counter online security threats but the reality is we're dealing with criminals who use ever more sophisticated methods to attack computers.

Regardless of security measures that have been pre-installed, entirely new and complex threats will continue to emerge.

Prevention is the best defence! For many people today, a PC is increasingly becoming a vital investment for the home and as long as some basic measures are taken from the moment of boot-up and throughout its life-time, it can remain that way."
